Caring for Cavaliers
New Puppy List
Bowls for food and water.
Ceramic is a good material as well as stainless steel which cleans up easily.
Collar and leash. Adjustable collars that are all in one piece are the best and will expand as the puppy does. Leash should be not a retractable one.
Premium Dry Puppy Kibble.
We use and recommend Kirkland puppy food which can be found at Costco. There are also other good brands like Eukanuba small breed puppy food, AVO Derm puppy, Blue puppy and Royal Canin.
Metal tooth comb, soft bristle brush, nail clippers, ear cleaner, puppy shampoo and conditioner.
Greyhound comb, boar bristled brush, nail clippers, any tear free conditioner and shampoo is good. We use and recommend Chris Christensen products.

Cavaliers with other animals -
Cavaliers do well with other species and creatures. Ours are raised with a big dog, a very little dog, horses (they aren't good with livestock in general), and a couple of kitties (that think they are dogs). It is only on rare occasion that a Cavalier will have a prey drive and will chase small creatures like bunnies, lizards, birds, butterfly's, etc for more than just fun.
Cavaliers with children -
Cavaliers love, love, love children. It seems that the spontaneous, exuberant energy that children have suits the nature of Cavaliers. Our cavaliers simply love children. We do have a rule though, children have to sit down cris-cross their legs and then they can play with the puppies. No carrying puppies around since puppies like to be spontaneous as well.
Grooming Cavaliers -
Cavaliers shed during the spring and summer time. Even though they don't have a double coat like other breeds such as Collies, Pomeranian's, Shepard's, etc. they do have hair. Anything with hair will loose hair, just like we do.
You will need a boar bristle brush and a greyhound metal tooth comb to properly care for your cavaliers coat. Small nail clippers are useful as well. There are many excellent shampoo and conditioners on the market but we use Cris Christanson products.

Exercising Cavaliers - This is a rather redundant statement because a Cavalier can find the exercise it needs weather it is in a small home (R.V.) or a large home with acreage. Cavaliers are by their very nature and structure an athletic dog with an average amount of energy but they want to do what you are doing. If that is watching TV they are on board, if that is going places, that's fine as well. Simply put, what you do is what they want to do.
Traveling - Cavaliers travel very well and thru out our 16 + years of raising Cavaliers we have had one girl that car rides didn't agree with her. Generally they love to go places and meet new people and new friends.
